The trade freeze is upon us and Jordan Eberle is still an Edmonton Oiler…for now. Eberle has been the subject of trade rumors for what seems like two years now and his time in Edmonton is finally coming to an end. I’ve heard from my source and he’s confirmed what all the insiders have been saying, “Chiarelli wants Eberle gone by July first.” He believes the Oilers are happy with Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and would much rather move Eberle as soon as possible.
Eberle had a bit of a down season this past year, but that’s not to say the 27-year-old winger is washed up. He spent this past season playing up and down the line-up. It’s hard to establish chemistry and light up the score sheet when you’re playing with Connor McDavid one night then Matt Hendricks the next. Jordan Eberle is likely to fetch a decent return, but just not as good as Peter Chiarelli and company once hoped for.
A team that has been linked to the Eberle rumors periodically is the New York Islanders. The Islanders were rumored to be shopping Travis Hamonic and an Eberle/Hamonic trade almost happened last season. Oh, how times change. According to insider Darren Dreger the Eberle/Hamonic swap is not going to happen. The Islanders would likely offer restricted free agent Calvin de Haan and possibly a prospect or pick for Eberle, but not Hamonic. Darren Dreger reported last night that the Islanders are “going to do something big in the next week here. And by big, I mean they’re going to add an offensive piece.” Could Eberle be that big move Dreger is foreshadowing? With New York sending Mikhail Grabovski to Vegas, along with a first round pick, they should have plenty of cap space to add a guy like Eberle, or Matt Duchene if they’re willing to pay up.
Outside of the New York Islanders, Peter Chiarelli only has a handful of options.
One of those options is the Carolina Hurricanes. Ron Francis has done an excellent job of stockpiling defensive prospects. The Hurricanes are absolutely LOADED with young talent on the blue-line. Carolina will likely have to part with one of their many prospects if they want to add some offensive help. Luckily for Ron Francis, Jordan Eberle may be had for a relatively cheaper price than once thought. A guy like Ryan Murphy and a second round pick could get the job done, but then again I’m not Peter Chiarelli. Edmonton wouldn’t have to retain any salary in a deal with Carolina, which is why Ryan Murphy and a pick could get it done.
The Vegas Golden Knights are finishing up picking their team and from what’s available they’re not going to have any trouble on defense, but they’re gonna lack offensive fire power. Enter Peter Chiarelli. Maybe George McPhee moves one of the defenseman he picks to Edmonton for Eberle. Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal suggested that a Cody Eakin/Jordan Eberle swap could be in the cards and it just so happens that Cody Eakin was not protected by the Stars and could be headed to Sin City.
