The Chicago Blackhawks will head to the Air Canada Centre tonight to battle the Toronto Maple Leafs. This isn’t just your usual match-up of two unbeaten times, but two unbeaten teams who have scored 30 goals between them. The Blackhawks beat the defending champs 10-1 to open the season and followed it up with a 5-1 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Leafs started the season with a 7-2 win over the Winnipeg Jets and then an 8-5 win over the Rangers. It’s safe to say there may be a few goals scored tonight.
The Chicago Blackhawks will be without second-line center Nick Schmaltz, who left Saturday’s game with a lower-body injury. Schmaltz played just 34 seconds against the Blue Jackets before taking an awkward hit from two Columbus players.
Joel Quenneville said Schmaltz wouldn’t make the trip to Canada with the team, but didn’t rule him out for Thursday’s contest against the Wild.
Anton Forsberg, who was acquired along with Brandon Saad, will make his first regular season start in a Blackhawks uniform tonight. He’ll need to be sharp since these Maple Leafs know how to score goals.
The Blackhawks play their first back-to-back of the season, so we’ll likely see Corey Crawford tomorrow night against the Montreal Canadiens. That game can be seen on NBCSN at 7:30 ET.
Tonight will be an interesting match-up between two high-powered offenses. I guess for tonight you could say that defense is optional.
